Cleveland Browns 2001 Season

  • Former University of Miami head coach and Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Butch Davis replaces Chris Palmer as the Browns head coach and makes an immediate impact by improving the Browns to a seven-win season and finish ahead of the Tennessee Titans, Cincinnati Bengals, and Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Central Division
  • For the third consecutive year the Browns have the first pick in the NFL draft and take defensive tackle Gerard Warren from the University of Florida
  • Week Two games of the NFL postponed because of the 9/11 terrorists attack
  • In Week Six the Browns beat the defending Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens for the first time 24-14
  • In the seventh game of the season the Browns lead the Chicago Bears 21-7 with 1:52 remaining. The Bears drive 80 yards and score a touchdown with :28 seconds left in the game. The Bears recover their onside kick and tie the game 21-21 three plays later on a 34 yard Hail Mary from Shane Matthews to Marty Booker. The Browns stop the Bears on their first possession in overtime but a deflected Tim Couch pass is returned 16 yards by Mike Brown for the winning touchdown
  • Rookie Cornerback Anthony Henry co-leads the NFL with 10 interceptions (Ronde Barber Tampa Bay Buccaneers) including a 97 yard interception return for a touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Linebacker Jamir Miller co-leads the AFC with 13 sacks and becomes the first Browns player since their return to make the Pro Bowl
  • Browns acquire quarterback Kelly Holcomb who had been on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad in 1995, on the NFL Europe team Barcelona Dragons in 1996, and signed by the Indianapolis Colts for the 1996-97 seasons
